Abstract

Fire fatality statistics compiled throughout the United States and Australia clearly show that being asleep in a residential home is a serious risk factor for death resulting from a fire. However the likelihood of death occurring is affected by more than simply time and place. Analysis of the characteristics of both victims and survivors reveal that age is a significant risk factor, with the likelihood of fatality increased for both the very young, and the very old.
